(About 1667-About 1721) |
Michael Newbold
• Alt. Marriage Date, 24 Feb 1698. • Alt. Birth, 1668. 76 • Public Office: Appointed Justice, May 1701, Burlington County, NJ. • Military. Officer in New Jersey Colonial Militia • Note. When Michael's father died, Michael inherited the Oneonickon property, which has remained in the hands of his descendants ever since. For a number of years he served on the traverse jury, and August 8, 1698 took his place on the bench as one of the justices for Burlington County. His last appearance on the bench was on June 13, 1721. He was elected township clerk on January 1, 1697, and appears at one time to have been township assessor. He became an extensive landholder in various sections of the province, and at the time of his death was one of the largest landed proprietors in New Jersey. He was a member of the Church of England, and one of the organizers of St. Ann's, afterwards. • Geographical Note: Eckington, Derbyshire, England. Though many sources quote the town of Eckington as being in Yorkshire, it technically lies in Derbyshire, roughly one kilometer from the Yorkshire boundary and about four kilometers from Handsworth-Woodhouse. I have found no historical evidence indicating the boudaries have moved in the last 500 years. Michael married Rachel Cleayton, daughter of John Cleayton and Alice Myers, on 24 Feb 1697. (Rachel Cleayton was born on 16 Jun 1677 and died after 17 Apr 1712.) |
