The dream of building a fine arts museum in Elmhurst began in the late 1950's when the Elmhurst Artists' Guild, (established in 1946), bought two lots near Wilder Park in hopes of eventually constructing a building. In 1974, Eleanor King Hookham, an Elmhurst artist and co-founder of the Elmhurst Artists' Guild, and her husband Commander Robert E. Hookham, established the Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation as a chartered non-profit publicly supported organization with thoughts of building a community museum. Elmhurst IL.
Eleanor married Commander Robert E. Hookham.
